Warrior

My friend Hannah and I LOVE the movie Warrior. She lives up in Idaho, and we have a tradition that whenever she's down in Provo we get together and watch it. Most of the time we end up just talking while the movie is on, but we always make sure to watch the last 20 minutes of the movie with rapt attention, and sometimes even rewind it to watch the end again. Hannah was in town this Monday and we watched the movie again. After she left I was considering why I like it so much, and why we've made this little, silly, tradition. The movie is not a funny one, and it has some very serious and intense situations between these two sons and their father. I originally saw it because I love the actor in the movie (Tom Hardy) and thought the MMA fighting scenes looked cool. It turned out to be a movie that was a lot deeper than that, focusing on the relationship between a recovering alcoholic and his two grown up sons. Although the movie doesn't really connect with my life, for some reason it really means a lot to me, and I'm not sure why.

Overall I would say the movie had some content that was not so great (the sons are very angry with their father, and very unforgiving. The fight scenes are also intense...and there language) but the overlying message of the movie is a good one (learn to forgive others, especially those who have hurt you the most). I think that's why I really love it. The last scene in the movie (spoiler) is the two brothers fighting eachother at a huge MMA competition, and the older brother has to make the younger brother tap out. The younger brother, Tommy, has a dislocated shoulder and just won't give up. The older brother, Brendan, gets him in a headlock and is trying and trying to get him to tap out. He's telling Tommy that its okay, and that he can tap, but he won't. Finally, with a lot of emotion, Brendan tells Tommy he loves him. Tommy finally taps. I know it sounds cheesy in writing, but it is the BEST scene. Although the movie is rough around the edges, and has some content I don't really like, I believe that this touching scene is why I love it so much, and why Hannah and I have made it a tradition to watch it.
