Scary Movie
I was thinking about scary movies (as it is nearing Halloween, and other people have posted about them) and recalled a funny experience I had a few years ago. Back in 2010 I went with a friend to see the movie Devil in the movie theater. Its a movie about people getting trapped in an elevator and the devil coming and killing them off one by one. It was pretty freaky, and too scary for me, and I had a hard time sleeping after seeing it. The next day at work (I worked in the JFSB as a custodian) I was telling my coworker about the scary movie. At one point we had to get into the elevator to go get some cleaning supplies from the basement. We both nervously got into the elevator, and I tried to seem calm and collected, even though I was scared. The elevator started moving downward, and then all of a sudden lurched a bit and stopped moving. My heart stopped, and I looked over at my friend and his eyes were wide open. I knew I had the same shocked and frightened look on my face. Luckily, before I could have a complete meltdown the eleveator lurched again and started moving. Needless to say, we did not ride the elevator back up, and went and told our supervisor that it wasn't working right.

Funny Apps
Last Wednesday night I was at church late after institute. I was sitting with some friends and my sister, and we were all chatting. One of my friends mentioned he had to leave, but remembered a funny app he had downloaded and showed it to us. It was an app that let you take a picture of two people and it would swap their faces. It was hilarious, and all of us with smart phones went and downloaded the app. That friend left, and so there were just four of us sitting together. We started using the app and spent an hour swapping faces and cracking up. It amazed me later that something as simple as a goofy, face-swapping app could keep us occupied for so long. Sometimes I get so tired of smart phones and apps and things, but then something like this happens and I realize how fun they can be. It was cool too because I think of apps as a one person thing, but we were able to include everyone in our group and have a blast! :)
Guns 'N Roses
So Wednesday night I got some bad news and was really frustrated. I had gone over to my friend's house to vent, and we stayed up super late. I've been waiting for something since May, and I found out the other day I'll have to wait even longer than I had planned...so I was bummed out. My friend and I chatted for a while and watched a movie, and even though it was good to talk, I walked to my car to go home feeling sad. I got into my car, and forgot I had left the radio on really loud. I turned my car on and was greeted by Guns 'N Roses' song Patience. It was exactly what I needed to hear, and took me by surprise. Although I was still a little disappointed I was reminded once again that I need to have more patience in life, and trust in the Lord's timing of things. :)

Good Omens
The second book I mentioned was one
my sister introduced me to. My older sister Leiah wants to be an author, and
has great taste in literature. I had tried to read one of Neil Gaiman’s books
before, but thought it was a little too “out there” and didn’t finish it. I
then found Good Omens in her room and
decided to read it. It was a funny book, and it made me think. The boy who is
supposed to be the Anti-Christ has a choice to make that will impact the
history of the world, and through some funny events he ends up deciding to be
who he truly is - a kind and loving little boy. Although I don’t often think
about the book, I have read it many times and often find different meaning in
it each time I read it. I also really enjoy it because it is nice to see how
things can play out for the “good guys” even when it seems like the “bad guys”
have everything going for them. It’s a good story about finding who you really
are, even if it’s not what others expect of you, and I try to follow that in my
own life.
Are You My Mother
I
loved Are You My Mother? as a child
because my own mother would read it to me. She would make all of the sounds
that the story called for. It was funny to hear her making the sounds, and it
was nice to have some time alone with her (I’m the 5th of 7
children). Whenever we read it, she would also usually end by assuring me she
wouldn’t lose me, and she’d always be my mother, and it was wonderful. It was a
fairly simple book, but meant a lot to me to read it with my mother. It was
also interesting, because I dated a guy pretty seriously last year from Haiti
and he had never heard of this book. On one of our dates we went to Borders and
I picked out that book and read it out loud with all of the sounds. It brought
back a lot of memories about my childhood and the time I spent with my mother,
and it was great.

The Hunger Games
Now I know my last post was about violence in Vampire movies and shows, but I watched the Hunger Games and had to write about the violence in it as well. I know its a super violent movie, and I know I also don't need to be watching it...but I find myself watching it anyway. Its almost like I justify the violence because of the characters and the emotional parts of the movie. My sister's boyfriend refuses to watch it with us because he doesn't like the violence. And that's understandable. But there's something that always draws me in...and I'm not sure what. I didn't even like the books, but I do like the movie. That's different for me.
